What are the Penalties for Marijuana Possession in Mississippi?

In Mississippi, being found in possession of marijuana can lead to harsh penalties:

• Simple marijuana possession is decriminalized for first-time offenders. Possession of up to 30 grams of cannabis is punishable by a maximum fine of $250.
• A second conviction carries a maximum jail term of 60 days – with a mandatory minimum sentence of five days – and a fine of up to $250.
• A third or subsequent conviction will result in a maximum 60-day jail sentence and a fine no more than $1,000.
• However, if up to 30 grams of pot is found in a vehicle, it is a misdemeanor offense that carries a jail term of up to 90 days and a maximum fine of $3,000. This means you could face misdemeanor charges on a first offense.

Lastly, possession of five kilograms or more is punishable by a maximum 30-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $1,000,000.
